弗吉尼亚联邦大学现拥有14个学院，跨工程、艺术、人文、药学、医学、生命等多个领域，在校学生3万多人，占地0.53平方公里。产生过一位诺贝尔学者——1980年的诺贝尔医学奖获得者巴茹·贝纳塞拉夫（Baruj Benacerraf）。巴茹·贝纳塞拉夫本科毕业于哥伦比亚大学，在弗吉尼亚联邦大学的弗吉尼亚医学院获得医学博士（MD）学位，是一位著名的免疫学家，因“发现了控制免疫反应的、遗传的细胞表面结构”而获得了诺贝尔生理医学奖。
学校历史
弗吉尼亚联邦大学的正式成立是在1968年，当时的里士满专业学院（Richmond Professional Institute, RPI）与弗吉尼亚医学院（Medical College of Virginia, MCV）合并，正式组建了弗吉尼亚联邦大学。但是弗吉尼亚医学院的历史却可以追溯至1838年汉普登·悉尼学院在里士满开设的医学系，1854年，该系独立，成为弗吉尼亚医学院。里士满专业学院则系1917年成立，初名里士满社会工作与公共卫生学院（Richmond School of Social Work and Public Health），1925年成为威廉玛丽学院的一个学部，1939年更名为里士满专业学院，仍然隶属威廉玛丽学院，直至1962年正式独立。1968年，弗吉尼亚州议会法批准将弗吉尼亚医学院和里士满专业学院，组建弗吉尼亚联邦大学。该校后来将1838年作为自己的立校的开始。
